Biological age vs. chronological age

Your chronological age is simple: the number of years since you were born. Your biological age is an estimate of how old your body behaves – how well your heart, metabolism, muscles and cells are holding up. Researchers use it because two people with the same birthday can age at very different speeds.

A biological age below your calendar age suggests your habits are working in your favor. A higher number is a signal, not a sentence: many of the drivers are everyday choices you can change.

How this calculator works

We believe in being transparent. This is a simple lifestyle-based estimate, not a lab test. It starts with your chronological age and adds or subtracts years for six everyday habits. There are no hidden formulas:

See sources and limits for how each habit is supported by research, and what the research does not show.

Anything not listed counts as neutral (0). The result is rounded to one decimal. Example: a 50-year-old who sleeps 7.5 hours, exercises 5+ days a week, eats Mediterranean-style, has low stress, has never smoked and drinks within low-risk guidelines gets a biological age of 41.

What moves the number

Sleep

Both short and very long sleep are linked to older-looking biology in research. A steady 7–8 hours is a great target for most adults.

Exercise

Regular movement is among the strongest predictors of healthy aging. Mix cardio with strength training to protect muscle.

Diet

Whole-food and Mediterranean-style eating patterns are consistently associated with longer, healthier lives. Ultra-processed food points the other way.

Stress

Chronic stress keeps stress hormones elevated and disrupts sleep. Daily recovery habits – walks, breathing, connection – help.

Smoking

Never smoking is one of the low-risk habits in large long-term studies. If you smoke, quitting at any age is a powerful step.

Alcohol

Staying within low-risk drinking guidelines, or not drinking at all, keeps this factor in your favor.

Frequently asked questions

What is biological age?

Biological age is an estimate of how old your body seems based on markers of health and function, rather than the number of birthdays you have had. Two people who are both 50 can have very different biological ages depending on genetics, lifestyle and health history.

How accurate is this biological age calculator?

This calculator is a simple, transparent lifestyle estimate. It starts from your age and adds or subtracts years for six habits: sleep, exercise, diet, stress, smoking and alcohol. The years are the site's own simplified weights; they are not measured in your body and are not taken from a single study. It is not a lab test and cannot measure your cells. Use it as a snapshot of your habits, not as a diagnosis. See how the calculator works and what the research shows.

Can I lower my biological age?

Many of the habits that push a biological age estimate up can be changed. Getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep, exercising most days of the week, eating a mostly whole-food or Mediterranean-style diet, managing stress, not smoking and keeping alcohol within low-risk guidelines all move the number in the right direction in this calculator. Research on lifestyle and biological ageing points the same way, although studies measure different things (see the methodology).

How is biological age measured in a lab?

Lab-based tests use biomarkers such as DNA methylation patterns (epigenetic clocks), routine blood markers (for example PhenoAge) or glycans on antibodies. Results differ between methods, and each test measures something slightly different. This free calculator does not replace those tests.

Is my data stored or shared?

No. Your answers are calculated in your browser and saved only in your own browser's local storage, so the calculator can restore them on your next visit. Nothing is sent to our servers. Use the Retake button or clear your browser data to remove them.

How often should I retake the test?

Retake it whenever your habits change, for example after a month of better sleep or a new exercise routine. Because the calculator only reflects lifestyle inputs, your result changes as soon as your habits do.
